Riomaggiore is the most eastbound village among the Cinqueterre four ones. The first village that you meet by coming from La Spezia and placed in the tight valley of the Rivus Mayor Flow that nowadays is covered.
It is structured in large terraces like the villages placed in river valleys and it is dated of 8th century according to tradition, founded by a group of Grecian people escaping from the persecution by Leone the 3rd the Isaurian. The houses, painted of typical Ligurian colours, follow the model of Tower-houses, developed high over three or fourlevels, the ones linked to the others in parallel barriers.
The access to houses is possible from the rear side by the upper level besides of the main one. In the higher side you can find the parrish church of Sain Giovanni Battista, built up in 1340 as per order of the Bishop of Luni.
The Diciplinatis Prayers' building is dated of 16th century while on the opposite side you can find the ruins of the castle dated of 15th-6th century in a higher position. In Riomaggiore village starts the Love Way (Via dell'Amore) that links it to Manarola, a very impressive pedestrian way where you can enjoy wonderful villages, between the howling waves that break on the rocks and the salted air.
