This centre draws its origins from a federation of small Etruscan centres; then, in the Roman Eve it becomes a colony and takes the name of Sena Julia. After several events during which Siena is the protagonist of history, that town achieve much more importance in the age of commune.
Its luck occurs because of it finds itself in the middle of the mythic Francigena way, linking not only the North to the South of Italy but even italy to Europe.
Piazza del Campo is the heart of the town; there you can watch the historical Palio, that is a horse race around its centre having the shape of a "Mantel" with only one point, in the whole area where from you can fully enjoy the challenge as it develops.
Both Italian people and foreigners meet one another in any season and melt with the University soul of the town, by enjoying the sight of the Mangia Tower and the Public Palace, both symbols of the civic power.
Therefore the sight that you can enjoy from the gardens of the Medicis Fortress is wonderful too, by placing the Saint Domenico church in perspective with the Dome, with the unmistakable arch that seems to be the entry door to a parallel and mysterious world and the Museum of Saint Maria della Scala (ancient "Spedale").
It is not a case that in 1995 the UNESCO declared the Tuscan centre as "Patrimony of Man Kind".
