The “Alta Valle del Tevere” (“High Tevere Valley”) includes includes 8 Communes: Città di Castello, Citerna, Lisciano Niccone, Montone, Monte S.Maria Tiberina, Pietralunga, San Giustino Umbro and Umbertide that is the area placed in the very northern part of Umbria Region at the borders with Toscana and Marche with which it has intensively had social and cultural exchanges.
Città di Castello is the most representative centre of this area. It was never submitted by Etruscans and was a rich Roman Municipium known as Tifernum Tiberinum. After many vicissitudes in 1400 the town was under the power of Vitelli Family that ameliorated it with beautiful buildings and art works.
In the rich earth of Umbria, in the concerning area the Nature has been preserving for ages its trasure: the truffle. Ever since the remotest ages the “Precious Bulb” has been the main character of mysterious tales, exalted by writers and sung by poets. Cicero considered it as the son of the Earth and Plinio thought it was a callosity of the earth and a miracle of Nature. Actually it is a hypogeal mushroom that grows underground in symbiosis with a superior plant. The lucky setting of the Alto Tevere Valley earth and the perfect preservation of the wood patrimony allow you to extract plenty of high quality truffles, both white and black. As it is traded as “Alba’s product (Piemonte Region)” or “Acqualagna’s one (Pesaro province - Marche Region)” the truffle of High Tevere Valley looses definitely its link to the original land. That is the reason why many local firms are committing to make the concerning area acknowledged as one of the main producers of truffle in the national and international trade.
