Anghiari boasts ancient origins and has been preserving its featuring medieval look for ages as laying upon a hill over the Tevere and Sovara valleys.
Certainly during the Middle Age Anghiari achieved the maximum importance above all for the evident strategic position: It is nominated firstly in a parchment dated of 1048, preserved in the archive of Città di Castello, though the first settlements were in Roman eve. First s a dominion of the Lords of Galbino and then of the Camaldolese, the village saw one of the most important moments of its history in the battle of Anghiari that, the 29th of June 1440 marked the victory of the Florentine troups, allied to the Pope against the Milanese army. By the creation of Granduchy of Toscana, the community of Anghiari expanded its lands beyond the Tevere river. After the Napoleonic events and the Restoration ones, Anghiari lived actively the years of Risorgimento, until the plebiscite in 1860 that signed its adherence to the Savoia Kingdom.
