Castello di Modanella dated 12th Century gives its name to the farm and wine company that extends for 638 hectares south-east of the Siena’s province; a land where hills and woodlands alternate each others.
A careful study of the “terroir” and of the morphological conditions has enabled us to identify the most suitable areas for grape production. Both authoctons and international grapes are grown in our 22 hectares of vineyards: Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 1987, when the property was acquired by the present ownership, it was decided to give up the massive production of Chianti and go for a single varietal production of high quality.
Despite the fact that it was a very courageous choice, at that time, it has proved a rewarding one, and it has become, ever since, the company philosophy.
Our red wines have great expression and unique taste that fully express the land flavors and the care of the people that year after year are devoted to their creation.
Only in recent years we have decided to resume the bottling of the Chianti in our range of products. A Chianti DOCG “Torri Antiche” produced in accordance with the traditional winemaking process that reflects the old style of making Chianti.
A much loved niche product is the Vin Santo del Chianti “Ergo Sum” which is aged for a minimum of 5 years in small cherry barrels.
Last but not least, starting on 2006, four single-varietals Grappa to complete our range of products: Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The organically grown olive groves produce an excellent “Extra virgin Olive Oil”. The olives are carefully hand picked and taken to a very modern mill within few days from the harvest for a very high quality result.
