“Casentino Forrests – Mountain Falterona and Campigna” National Park
In the area known as Casentino valley there are hardwood and coniferous forrests inhabited by protected animal species. They limit that valley that has lived for thousand years of history and from which the Arno river gushes out and flows, one of the most important rivers in Italy.
by the D.P.R. Dated of july 12th 1993 the “Istituzione dell’Ente Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna” was created. It is managed by the autonomous Board ruled by the law no. 394/91
It covers an area of about 36.843 hectars, shared in three areas differently protected.
Area 1 “total preservation”: totat surface 924 hectars; it includes the Sasso Fratino, Pietra and the Northern cliff of Monte Falco whole Natural Reserves.
Area 2 “protection”: total surface 14.892 hectars; it includes the most part of regional forrests, the monumental complex of La Verna and the National Biogenetic Natural Reserves (Camaldoli, Scodella, Campigna and Badia Prataglia).
Area 3 “care and promotion”: total surface 21.027 hectars; it includes the most part of the private properties, pat of the regional forrests and all the inhabited centres.
Living the Park
The Park can be visited by pleasant excursions on foot, by mountain bike, by riding a horse or, in the wintertime, with the excursion skis and snowshoes, along the 600 km of the paths net.
Besides of the most demanding trekking tracks 9 Nature Paths are present in the area of the Park, these are short tracks placed in easily accessible areas, whose main feature is to be provided to show the peculiarities that you encounter along the walk and that could easily escape from less attentive and less trained visitors.
Moreover in Campigna and in Badia Prataglia there are two “Paths for everybody... senses” accessible to everybody.
On the area there are the Visit Centres, important access and orientation buildings for the visitor, all structured according to a specific theme, regarding the area where they lay.
Besides of Visit Centres there are also some Info Points. Other buildings in the Park are: the Botanic Garden of Valbonella (in the commune of S. Sofia), the Arboreto and the Museo Forestale “Siemoni” in Badia Prataglia, the Museo Forestale “G. Campadelli” in Campigna. Over the area there are also many service areas equipped with tables, benches and some of them have also fireplaces and drinkable water fountains.
