Since 1965 some researches of Archaeological Superintendance in Toscana have let many very important archaeological ruins be discovered in the Artimino area and dated back to the 7th century before Christ.
The acropolis of the Etruscan settlement is thought to lay over the actual villa (built up and belonging to the Medicis) called “La Ferdinanda”.
The Carmignano wine fame is undoubtedly accompanied by the ancient history of that Commune.
The finding of wine jars inside some Etruscan tombs and the assignment of some lands between Arno and Ombrone rivers by Caesar to his veterans, between the 50 and the 60 years before Christ, that had been tilled with grapevines for that eve, reminds you much back in time.
The first sure documents about local wine and oil production are dated of 804 after Christ under the Franks dominion.
In the parchment of concession of lands around Seano and Capezzana by the Church to the Franks you could read “vineis, silvis et olivetis”, vineyards, woods and olive groves rented in an ancient way similar to métayage. That great wine suitable for roasted meats and game, for long aging periods had become really so famous that in 1716 the Granduchy of Toscana, who then was Cosimo the 3rd de’ Medicis issued a law and then a rule by establishing precise laws and very severe about tilling of grapevine and the production of Carmignano wine – that was a kind of Disciplinary of Production ahead of its time.
The name comes from the roman legionary: Carminius.
Since the 1125 the story of the Bastione della Rocca Bastione della Rocca (Carmignano, Via di Castello – ouverture on thursday, saturday and sunday since 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. - phone Pro loco +39 055-8712468) sought-after during the everlasting war between Pistoiese and Florentine people. At the beginning of 1900 the Rocca passed to Petroni family. In the land surrounded by the Rocca an activity of growing of vegetable gardens, vineyards and olive groves then started. In 1990 the Rocca had already been bought by the Commune of Carmignano.
