The name of Torrita that still nowadays preserves its medieval soul has appeared for the first time around in the year 1000 and has emerged later as linked to the wars between the Republics of Siena and Firenze for the conquest of the political and economical egemony about the actual Toscana region.
As a faithful fortress of thr Siena Republic Torrita for several ages has been one of its most important strategic outposts and took part in the bloody struggle of Montaperti in 1260 when Siena did its best to send back the advance of florentine Guelfos busy conquering the Ghibellino town. Further to several sieges and pillages in 1557 Torrita definitely surrended; as it was defeated by Charles 5th, allied with Firenze, it was occupied by the Imperial troups and absorbed by the Toscana Granduchy.
