The Cahedral
The Dome, dedicated to Saint Mary, is one of the masterpieces of Romanic style architecture in which are melt
together various classical stylistic elements such as late ancient, bizantine, Longobardian-Emilian and Islamic
as a late proof of the Pisan cultural flowerishing of that eve and of the complex culture of its architect Buscheto.
The Bell Tower
The Bell Tower, the fmous pending Tower, was built up starting in 1173 but soon the works stopped at the third
floor for the important pendence that the tower suffered and one century later the works began again under the
supervision of Giovanni di Simone and maybe Giovanni Pisano who, while trying to correct the pendance, they add
three more floors with opposite inclination; between 1350 and 1372 Tommaso PIsano added the cell containing the bell.
The Baptistry
The buiding of the Baptistry was even long and dfficult as the rest of the complex. It was built up starting since
1152 by Diotisalvi, in marble with a circle shaped basis inspired by Anastasis of the Saint Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
After a long interruption the works began again in the second half of 13th century, under the direction of Giovanni and
Nicola PIsano, to whom is attributed the building of small loggias of the second level surmounted by cusps and great sculpted statues.
The original dome was made starting since 1358 and Cellino di Nese and the Master Zibellino from Bologna were involved.
