Montevarchi is an urban centre placed in Valdarno within Arezzo province. The Arno River that gushes out in Casentino mountain from Falterona top and flows down to the valley up to the Pratomagno slopes. Near Rondine (AR) the river bends – as Dante Alighieri wrote – to pursuit to Valdarno and sharing the area in Upper and Lower Valdarno. The first is made of villages laying along the river Arno: Levane, Montevarchi, Cavriglia and San Giovanni Valdarno; the other gets closer to the slopes of Pratomagno: Ponte Buriano, Castiglion Fibocchi, San Giustino Valdarno, Loro Ciuffenna, Castelfranco di Sopra and Terranuova Bracciolini.
Montevarchi, nowadays is a modern and industrialized centre but still preserves a small but meaning museum net, made of Paleontological Museum belonging to the Valdarno Academy of Poggio, the museum of Sacred Art of Collegiata and Galeffi Museum.
Since 1996 the Commune has activated a suitable agreement to be renovated year after year with the Cultural voluntary service Association Centre Saint Lodovico for the opening, conservation, receiving for public and promotion of citizen museums.
Moreover the Culture Assessorship activated itself to care about and promote that important cultural patrimony, supporting the realization of a territorial museum system and the development of a collaboration network among museums that brought the Montevarchi Administration to sign up
an agreement among the ten Communes of Valdarno to make a territorial system of museums called “Museums of Upper Valdarno” in close relation with the Province museum netweork.
