Aggius lays at 514 mt above the sea level, it is a typical Gallura village that lays among the nuraghi, at the slopes of the saw-shaped granite chain called “Monti of Aggius”: Sotza mountain (mt. 789) and Cross Mountain (mt. 666).It is 6 km far from Tempio Pausania and 70 km far from Sassari. Until 1958 Aggius was a head town of a Commune that took all the wide area that is included between the Coghinas river and extends up to Vignola. Nowadays, after the constitution of Communes of Trinità d’Agultu (1958) and Viddalba (1975), the communal lans is reduced more or less at 82 square-km, while it counts about 1800 inhabitants. The panorama is certainly one of the most beautiful in Sardegna Island: Aggius appears as set among strange-shaped granite rocks, very aged cork oaks and vineyards.
The history
Aggius boasts very ancient origins. Its name could come from Greek aghios that means sacrosanct, or from the Latin agnus that means lamb to show to the ancient presence of pens and sheep sheds or even ajus that means rightless or outlawyer, certainly for its independent and rebel character of its primary inhabitants, who were led to rule themselves according to their own rules, to trust the wise men for controversies since they acted the classic “justice beneath the tree” and to refuse, often by violent ways, any imposition of tributary and conscriptions.
As an ancient and important “villa” of the guardianship of Gemini, its land, up to the recent Commune autonomy of Trinità D'Agultu, Badesi and Viddalba was very wide. Its history in practice begins in the 1358 under the King of Aragona.
