Typical high valley town inhabited ever since the Etruscan people. In the Roman eve it suffered the several barbarian invasions. Then it achieved the role of small market area (from that it took the name of toponime of Mercatello). Only in the half of 13th century the actual inhabited centre was born. In 1417 it passed in the dominions of the future duchy of Urbino. As rich in monuments, the town offers its visitors the ancient Collegiata church, with the annexed museum of furnitures and sacred hangings and the romanic church of S. Francesco, with the Picture gallery where some precious paintings on tables are collected and dated of 13th and 14th centuries. Other churches are those of Santa Chiara, Santa Croce and S.Maria of Metauro, besides of Monastery of the Cappuccine. Among the buoldings you can find the Palazzo Gasparini along with Palazzo Ducale, the so called Palazzaccio and the pitoresque romanic bridge on the Metauro river. A tiypical aspect of Mercatello and it surroundings is given by the perfect conservation of the main monuments, with their rich net of country houses and nucleus and most important villages such as the burgh of Castello della Pieve that are as a crown to the inhabited centre and make the rural and mountain paths impressive, and can be passed through on foot, by mountain bike or by horse.
In gastronomy the tagliatelle, the bostrengo and the scroccafusi are worth of a note.
