It is a church in Arezzo that was built up in 1278 in Gothic style with a single nave.
The beautiful Cross placed inside the Abbey has been realized in 1319 by Bonaventura. The Cloister, designed by Giuliano da Maiano is dated of 1489.
Bartolomeo della Gatta has realized the Saint Lorenzo fresco in 1489.
The 1565 id the beginning date of the complete transformation of the Church by the project of Giorgio Vasari.
The works longed until 1600 and in 1650 the bell tower was built up. After the transformation the Church became of three naves.
That's why even the main door was moved but even the original one remained there after being closed (see the picture).
The presbitery is domained by the monumental complex of the altar that was made by Giorgio Vasari in 1563 for the chapel of the family in the parish church of Saint Mary (where vasari is buried) and then moved in that abbey church in 1865.
In the Abbey church is saved the "Pala Albergotti" representing the Assumption and Crowning of the Blessed Virgin.
The crowning was made by Vasari for Filippo Salviati in 1567, destined at the beginning to the Sisters of Saint Vincenzo in Prato but then purchased in Arezzo by the jurist Nerozzo Albergotti for his family chapel (1570), placed on the left of the master altar in the Pieve di Santa Maria in Arezzo.
Mister Nerozzo di Giovanni di Antonio Albergotti was the stepfather of Vasari's nephew, his hominimous and the son of Vasari's brother Pietro, who was born in 1562.
As the painter died he was even the testamentary executor.
Albergotti is supposed to be the one who wanted to extend the work by adding the perimetral tables and the great ring.
The work stood in Pieve di Santa Maria until 1865 when it was moved in Badia along with the master Altar (even made by Vasari) while recovering the Pieve that, while attempting to restore its medieval look it was deprived of all the following eve works and those wer moved off or destroyed.
For that eve the precious big sized work has been preserved in such a low evidence position on the right wall of the Badia choir.
In the occasion of the recovery, finished in December of 2009 the central altar-piece has been placed on the counter right façade of the church.
gthe recovery of the perimetral tables and the monumental ring are still in progress.
In the Abbey Church yu can admire even a baroque style masterpiece: the trompe l'oeil of the fake dome painted on the canvas by Andrea Pozzo in 1702 and placed upside the main altar.
On the right side of the main altar is hanging a beautiful Cross painted on a table by Segna di Bonaventura in 1319.
